Career Coaching

Educational Consultant | Coach | SIP

John Sanderson

As an accomplished leader in secondary education, John has honed a wide range of skills to help develop school leaders in their strategic and operational effectiveness. As such, he is vastly experienced in working with a wide range of educational stakeholders. Most recently, this has included professional leadership coaching, headteacher appraisals and leading quality assurance reviews for individual schools, Multi Academy Trusts, and Challenge Partners.

He also Chairs the Executive Leadership Advisory Panel for the Ogden Trust, which works to engage with school leaders so that they are informed about, and can engage with, the exceptional programmes they offer.

Coaching

Developing Individuals & Teams

Schools are exceptionally busy and complex organisations, requiring a great deal of time, energy and skill from individual leaders and senior teams. In particular, the role of the Headteacher, with its associated accountabilities, can be as daunting as it is demanding. Consequently, many leaders find themselves, all too often, dictated to by the tyranny of the urgent, with little or no time to reflect and reconnect with their leadership values and strategic vision.

If left unchecked, leaders at every level will begin to experience a drop in their performance as drive and determination dissipate into a sense of drudgery and, at worst, despair.

Coaching ensures that leaders have dedicated time and space to pause from the daily demands and refocus on ‘why’ they do what they do. It also explores ‘how’ they can better manage their personal and professional demands to ensure they feel empowered, energised, and fulfilled.

John’s bespoke coaching programmes are built around the needs of individual leaders and teams. They usually consist of an agreed number of one-hour sessions, which can be adjusted to suit the school and their particular circumstances. The focus of the coaching sessions could range from one or more of the following:

Coaching Headteachers

  • Supporting newly-appointed headteachers
  • Helping sustain serving headteachers
  • Coaching School Leaders
  • Supporting newly-appointed school leaders
  • Helping sustain serving school leaders
  • Coaching School Leadership Teams
  • Developing an appreciation of team dynamics
  • Addressing concerns or conflicts with a team
  • Building resilience and resourcefulness across a team
  • Coaching Career Progression
  • Understanding your goals
  • Exploring the next steps
  • Bridging the gaps

John is an experienced leader in secondary education, specialising in professional coaching to empower school staff at all levels. His approach ensures that staff not only manage operational demands but also reconnect with their vision and personal values. Career coaching is a key focus, helping school staff identify goals, map out next steps, and bridge gaps for progression. John’s bespoke coaching programmes consist of tailored one-hour sessions designed to meet individual needs and challenges. These sessions enable staff in schools to pause from daily demands, build resilience, and enhance their sense of fulfilment. Whether supporting newly appointed teachers, sustaining experienced ones, or addressing team dynamics, John’s coaching cultivates clarity and confidence. For staff pursuing career advancement, his expertise provides structured guidance, helping them navigate opportunities and prepare for future roles. John’s programmes foster growth that is not only impactful but also deeply rewarding on both professional and personal levels.
