Entry Requirements

A successful teacher brings many qualities, including enthusiasm, resilience, integrity, patience and a commitment to helping young people succeed. To join our PGCE Secondary with QTS programme, you’ll also need to meet the following entry requirements.

Academic Requirements

Applicants should normally have:

  • An honours degree (typically 2:2 or above) from a UK higher education institution, or an equivalent qualification, in a relevant subject area.
  • Applicants with a third-class degree may still be considered on an individual basis.
  • GCSE Grade 4 (previously Grade C) or above in English Language or English Literature, Mathematics and Science. These qualifications must be achieved before the start of the course.

If you do not currently hold the required GCSE qualifications, the University of Worcester offers equivalency tests that may enable you to meet the entry requirements.

Not sure whether your qualifications are suitable?
Contact the University of Worcester Admissions Team at [email protected] for advice.

Additional Requirements

All applicants will be required to complete the standard checks associated with teacher training, including:

  • An Enhanced DBS Check, including a check against the Children’s Barred List
  • A check against the Teaching Regulation Agency Prohibition List
  • An overseas Certificate of Good Conduct where required
  • An occupational health assessment to confirm fitness to teach
  • For international applicants, IELTS 6.5 (or equivalent) where applicable

School Experience

Previous school experience is desirable but not essential.

During the interview process, we’ll discuss any experience you have working with children and young people and explore how this has helped inform your decision to pursue a career in teaching. If additional school experience would be beneficial, we’ll help guide you towards suitable opportunities.

If you’d like to gain experience in one of our partner schools before applying, you can register your interest through our School Experience programme.
